James Carney 2nd at USA 20K Champs

Preparation for the U.S. Olympic Marathon Trials is going smoothly for James Carney based at altitude in Boulder, Colorado. On September 3rd James ran a very fast 20K at the Stratton Faxon New Haven Road Race. His performance was exactly where we thought he would be. James has matured as an athlete this year and has run at a consistently high level both in training at altitude and in racing. After earning the Olympic A Standard for the 10,000 meters with his 27:43 race last April at Stanford (nearly a 45 second improvement from his personal best at the time) he is putting himself in the position to be a contender for the marathon team. James is excited to be previewing the Trials course this week as a guest of the New York Road Runners.

Dathan Ritzenhein places 9th at the IAAF World Track and Field Championships

Dathan Ritzenhein raced to a 9th place finish in the 10,000 Meters at the IAAF World Track and Field Championships on August 27th. In hot and humid conditions, Dathan moved up throughout the race trading off laps with University of Oregon standout Galen Rupp. Dathan was the 2nd American as Abdi Abdiraham finished in 7th while Rupp finished in 11th place. Dathan ran a strong race and to finish top ten in the world is fantastic. For more on Dathan's race check out his post race INTERVIEW on FLOCASTS

08/15/07 - Fast Times at Falmouth, Gearing Up for the U.S. Olympic Marathon Trials, Ritz heads to Osaka

While I have recently relocated to Eugene, Oregon, with athletes Jason Hartmann, Dathan Ritzenhein and Casey Burchill I am still coaching a group of athletes in Boulder, Colorado. We are using Eugene for sea-level and soft surface training and Boulder for altitude. James Carney and Ed Torres of Boulder competed in the historic Cigna Falmouth Road Race this past weekend in Massachusetts. James finished in 7th place in the top international field and he was the 2nd American finisher. Ed finished in 13th place overall and 4th American. Both athletes are in the early introductory period of their marathon preparation for the U.S. Olympic Marathon trials this fall, Nov. 3rd, in New York City. Both Jason Hartmann and Dathan Ritzenhein are also focusing on this exciting fall event. Dathan's first goal is the World Track and Field Championships in Osaka,Japan next week. He will be competing in the 10,000 meters. For more on Dathan's trip to Osaka check out his blog on FLOCASTS

I am really happy to be back here training the athletes in Eugene. The Eugene running community has reached out to support our athletes and welcome us as we prepare for the World Champs, Olympic Trials and Olympic Games. There is a great energy and excitement in town for the U.S.A. Olympic Track and Field Trials to be held here in early summer 2008. www.Eugene08.com. The meet organizers have already set up a countdown clock at the Fifth Street Market. Renovations at Hayward Field are underway. Overall, it is exciting to pass through the center of town and see so many great athletes training on the Amazon trail again. Recreational, collegiate and professional runners seem to be out all the time. The weather has cooperated as far as training and the recent re-surfacing of South Eugene high school's track has been a boon considering Hayward's renovation. There is definitely a spirit of cooperation in the community to get athletes running fast.

While I miss the Flatirons, the trees are everywhere...

03/05/07 - Tallahassee Training and Ritz at the Newsstands

Our first sea-level camp of 2007 has brought us to the lush Florida state capital of Tallahassee, also known as “Trailahassee”. This city is home to a fantastic trail system, a vibrant running community and many sunny days. Lots of generous runners (and non-runners) from the GULFWINDS TRACK CLUB and the MACLAY SCHOOL communities have shown us the essence of Southern Hospitality. Coach Gary Droze has rallied tremendous support for our visit. We also got some great tips on the Tallahassee area from Coach Pete Rea, of
ZAP FITNESS, who has been bringing his athletes here for a few seasons now. Thanks everyone!

For more photos from the recent Tallahassee Track workout visit John Kalin's Photo Gallery page of the Maclay School. MORE PHOTOS

02/11/07 - Championship Saturday

It was an exciting day in Boulder on Saturday as nearly 10,000 fans turned out to watch the USA Cross Country Championships at the Flatirons Golf Course. Athletes from the Boulder Performance Training Group contributed to the excitement. We had five men placing in the top fifteen: Dathan Ritzenhein 3rd place, Jorge Torres 4th place, James Carney 8th place, Ed Torres 10th place and Jason Hartmann 15th place. This was an outstanding group effort. In the Women's race Christine Bolf finished in 15th place and Lucinda Hull was 23rd.

Coach Hudson commented, "I was very pleased with how all the athletes ran, especially with this being the first race of the year for most of the athletes. Overall, it was a great event with great conditions. The course got muddier as the day went on, but it made for true cross country. The top four finishers in the Men's race were all alumni of Boulder's University of Colorado. This was a great showcase of Colorado athletes, and I think it is a testament to all Mark Wetmore has done to elevate Boulder to a great running town."
